Discover the Blackwater/West Road River route of the Alexander Mackenzie Heritage Trail, located in the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast region of British Columbia.

This is a 450 km (279 mi.) long corridor that starts at the mouth of the Blackwater
river, just west of Quesnel and stretches all the way to the Sir Alexander
Mackenzie Provincial Park. The Alexander Mackenzie Voyageur Route stretches
10,000 km across Canada, starting at Quebec City and ending up in Bella Coola.
The heritage trail takes you along Punchaw Lake, Blackwater Bridge, Gillies
Crossing and Titetown. It continues along the Euchineko Lake and into the
Kluskus Lakes territory. Alexander Mackenzie was taken down the Bella Coola
River to the Dean Channel by the local people.
Typical Day
Early to rise guarantees an early finish to a day of travel. We will eat,
sleep and make our way through the same route Alexander Mackenzie walked in
1793. The journey begins with a hearty breakfast and a quick start as we move
along the shores and valleys of the Euchineko River. We will stop for a light
lunch along the way, giving the hikers and bikers a break, not to mention
our horse teams and riding and pack horses.
The cooks move into action and begin the fire making process for the evening
dinner. After the dinner is done, a campfire warms the heart and keeps the
night chill at bay... if you brought your guitar, this would be the time to
bring it out. The night sky is filled with bright northern stars. Getting
sleepy ... and off to the bed(roll).
